Turpe Art Books

Turpe Art Books

Turpe (Tu:rpæ) is a newborn publishing house from Milan. We focus on art books of every form, from graphic arts to photography. Our philosophy is to design beautiful books and print them using the most noble techniques. There's no trace of digital production in our publications, we want human beings to take care of them in every step of their existence. They're made by artisans in Italy.

Please describe what you intend to exhibit and any projects you wish to launch at Ink Paper + Print: Tokyo, our first book. The illustrations collected in it have been on show at the Society of Illustrators of NY and in Japan. It is part of the Tabula Turpis collection, a series of artist's books on the topic of traveling. It has been printed in 250 limited and numbered copies on Fedrigoni Vellum paper and with double gold Pantone.

Hafod Press

Hafod Press

I have been making one-off books since 1996, and started Hafod Press in 2003 making limited editions of digitally printed books. This has enabled me to use photographic images and text and has widened my visual language and communication. As an artist involved primarily with painting, I make maybe one or two books a year. My books fall into two categories: my travel books and those that relate to the ideas and images I explore in my paintings. For me a book is a distillation of an experience or concept, often with an element of recording something that will never exist or happen again.

Please describe what you intend to exhibit and any projects you wish to launch at Ink Paper + Print: A selection of limited edition and one off books. The most recent books include FRAGILE one off books made in response to the Re-Take/Re-Invent project and MOSS GARDEN which responds to a piece of music by David Bowie and his legacy.

As a multidisciplinary artist I have a passion for making artists’ books and family albums. My work moves between photography, illustrations, painting and textiles evolving from single images to books, images in boxes or larger mixed media pieces. My artwork is concerned with my cultural heritage, memory, identity and loss. As an Iranian woman who has experienced discrimination through cultural and religious boundaries, such issues and subject matters are repeatedly addressed in my work. There is a sense of story telling and narrative in my photography work, which repeats and continues as you look at the body of work.

I try to upset the natural order of things through parody of serious publishers. I Have scientific works such as 'The Young person's Guide to Quantum Mechanics' and adventures into theology such 'After the Break - John Snow talks to God. I was the first book artist to parody Ladybird books and mine are still the funniest and blackest.'

Everything that happens in my work is concerned with the body and the human predicament. I present it in book form 'as it happens' showing images 'in the making’ as I experience them evolving in drawings and paintings and texts from day to day. I do not work towards final or definitive statements; images are in perpetual motion, always changing. Their restless imminence hurries my pursuit. I am dependent on a dialogue with a visual process which however unpredictable and accidental it may seem, is the only instigator I trust.

Please describe what you intend to exhibit and any projects you wish to launch at Ink Paper + Print: I will be exhibiting books printed between 2010 and 2017 – small paintings in folders.

Design For Today

Design For Today

Design For Today is a small press and publisher, launched in the summer of 2015, with the aim of working with designers and illustrators to create limited edition books, cards, and printed pleasures for the discerning collector and enthusiast.

Design For Today’s artists’ books are all designed, crafted and printed in the UK, using quality, sustainable materials and printed using the traditional processes of lithography, letterpress, screenprint, or linocut.  Editions are small, from 500 – 1500. Tomorrow’s collectable books today!

Aside from our Artists’ books Design For Today will also be reissuing ‘forgotten classics’ of mid-century design, contemporary European classics of illustration, and books devoted to aspects of 20th Century design and illustration, crossing the boundaries between academic dissertation and coffee-table publications.

Design For Today was founded by Joe Pearson, an established collector and writer on mid-century lithography. If you seek Design For Today’s inspiration look no further than Noel Carrington’s Puffin Picture Books, John Piper’s textiles, the fun of Bruno Munari, or the graphic design of the avant-garde Russian Children’s books.

Design For Today has a varied programme of publications. In our shop you will find Alice Pattullo’s Brick House, a tribute to Eric Ravilious & Edward Bawden. Louise Lockhart’s concertina book, Up My Street, a celebration of the vanishing High Street of laundrettes and children’s outfitters is available too. The Noel Carrington project is Joe Pearson’s definitive study of Noel Carrington, a privately printed limited edition book, bound at The Fine Press Bindery and printed at the Northend Press. The Special Edition features miniature books by Emily Sutton, Alice Pattullo, Jonny Hannah, Tom Frost & Liz Loveless. The Journal is a gallery of inspiration.

Rag-&-Bone Shop books comprises my handbound artist’s books, book necklaces, drypoints, etchings and cards. My imagery often arises from digital photographs, which I work into with etching, linocut, drawing, letterpress, typewriter, rubber stamps and embroidery. I’m interested in the opportunities the physical properties of the book afford to further narrative themes. Hence I often employ non-traditional materials, such as baking paper in 'Leaf Watermarks': its translucence and featherweight texture conveys the book’s theme of impermanence in a tactile way. My work is held in private and public collections and features in publications including 'Typewriter Art', ed. B. Tullett (Laurence King, 2014).

I would be exhibiting a range of my handbound books (including those books pictured), a small collection of miniature, handbound book jewellery, recent etchings, drypoints, hand engravings, giclée prints and cards. As I typically bind one original artist’s book, which I then reproduce as a limited edition, some of the books will be my originals and these wouldn’t be for sale, but can be handled and are available to commission.
